Niagara-on-the-Lake
General Information About Niagara-on-the-Lake
Niagara-on-the-Lake sits at the mouth of the Niagara River where it meets Lake Ontario, across from New York State. It’s part of the Niagara Region and is uniquely led by a “lord mayor,” a title that sets it apart from other Canadian municipalities. The town counted 19,088 residents in the 2021 census.
This small town plays an outsized role in Canadian history. Formerly known as Newark, it served as the first capital of Upper Canada (precursor to today’s Ontario). During the War of 1812, the town and nearby villages—including St. Davids and Queenston—saw heavy fighting around Fort George, and much of the settlement was destroyed. Today, traces of that past are preserved in historic sites, churches, and military architecture.
